Nolan Arenado’s walk-off slam in 10th powers Cards past Brewers

Nolan Arenado hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning to lift the Cardinals past the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 10-6 on Wednesday.

Luken Baker hit a two-run homer, Tommy Pham drove in two runs and Masyn Winn went 3-for-6 with an RBI for the Cardinals.

St. Louis starting pitcher Kyle Gibson allowed two runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Reliever Ryan Helsley (5-4) earned the victory.

Joey Ortiz drove in three runs and Jackson Chourio went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run for the Brewers, who saw their six-game winning streak end.

Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers allowed two runs on six hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Reliever Trevor Megill (0-3) took the loss.

Home plate umpire Brian Walsh ejected Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy in the ninth inning for protesting ball-and-strike calls.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Arenado hit a leadoff double, extending his on-base streak to 20 games, then Lars Nootbaar hit a single and Matt Carpenter walked.

Pham hit a sacrifice fly, and Winn hit an RBI single.

The Brewers cut their deficit to 2-1 in the fifth inning. Rhys Hoskins walked, moved to third on Sal Frelick’s single and scored on Ortiz’s sacrifice fly.

Milwaukee retook the lead 6-4 in the eighth inning. Willy Adames and Hoskins walked, and Ortiz hit a two-run double.

The Cardinals tied the score 6-6 in the ninth to force extra innings. Devin Williams hit Willson Contreras with a pitch to lead off the inning. Jose Fermin hit a double and Nootbaar, Carpenter and Pham drew walks to force in the tying runs.
