Patrick Mahomes, now celebrated as one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks, once honed his skills at Texas Tech University,
where he became a standout in the school’s tradition of prolific Air Raid quarterbacks. Though his status in the football world has soared,
Mahomes’ connection to his alma mater remains steadfast, a bond he recently reinforced through a notable act of generosity.
In a gesture that underscores his enduring loyalty to Texas Tech, Mahomes, along with his wife Brittany, contributed $5 million to the university’s football program.
This donation is a crucial piece of the $242 million South End Zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center project, aimed at elevating the school’s athletic facilities.
Texas Tech Athletics revealed that Mahomes’ donation will be honored by naming the walkthrough area in the Womble Football Center after him.
Furthermore, his name will grace the quarterback meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office in the soon-to-be-completed South End Zone Building at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Mahomes has become their most-famous alumni
During his tenure at Texas Tech from 2014 to 2016, Mahomes dazzled on the field, accumulating over 11,000 passing yards and 93 touchdowns across 32 games. Among his many highlights was a record-setting game against Oklahoma in 2016, where he threw for 734 yards, a performance that remains etched in college football history.
Since moving on from college football, Mahomes has achieved remarkable success with the Kansas City Chiefs, securing two NFL MVP awards and leading his team to three Super Bowl victories in six years as a starter. Off the field, he and his wife Brittany have expanded their influence, notably as co-owners of the Kansas City Current, a professional women’s soccer team.
Mahomes’ recent donation ensures that his legacy at Texas Tech will be permanently woven into the fabric of the program. Every time players enter the new facility, they will be reminded of Mahomes’ contributions both on and off the field, serving as inspiration for the next generation of Red Raiders.
As Texas Tech embarks on this ambitious expansion, Mahomes’ gift stands as a testament to his commitment to supporting the future of the program that played a pivotal role in his development as an athlete. This act of giving back not only highlights his success but also his desire to leave a lasting impact on the university that helped launch his illustrious career.
