Woods’ decision came after months of discussions with the PGA of America, which organizes the Ryder Cup. 

The PGA of America later named Keegan Bradley as the new captain of the U.S. team.

“With my new responsibilities on the PGA Tour and my time commitments, I feel I cannot devote the full attention and energy that the role of captain requires,” Woods said. 

“That doesn’t mean I don’t want to lead the team in the future. If the time is right, I would be willing to do so.”

Woods is currently the PGA Tour’s Director of Player Policy. He is also a key figure in ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

The 38-year-old Keegan Bradley will be the new captain at next year’s Ryder Cup. 

The 2011 PGA Championship winner has six PGA Tour wins and has played in two Ryder Cups in 2012 and 2014.

Bradley said he spoke to Woods before accepting the offer: “He’s been incredibly supportive and helpful. We all have a lot of respect for Tiger. I think the fact that he turned it down because he felt he couldn’t give his all because of his Tour responsibilities shows how much he cares about the team.”

The 2025 Ryder Cup will take place from September 26-28 at Bethpage Black, New York. Luke Donald will continue as captain of the European team after helping them win in Rome in 2023.
