Scottie Scheffler sparked controversy by firing his caddie Ted Scott after hearing that Ted had contracted a rare illness (video)

Scottie Scheffler is currently tied at T4 going into the third round. This he was able to dish out, despite his caddie, Ted Scott, battling an unfortunate illness on the greens.

However, if the situation worsens, then the golfer’s chances of claiming his third major victory might be severely affected.

But not to worry. Even then, the American’s bagman would be in a much better situation than Shane Lowry’s caddie if the Irishman fails to win the 2024 Open Championship.

The 37-year-old has had Darren Reynolds on the bag since early 2023 after his split with previous looper Brian ‘Bo’ Martin.

Case in point: The 1-time major champ hasn’t had much success this year, causing his bagman to severely fall behind in earnings, as opposed to Ted Scott.

Moreover, a loss at the Open despite remaining at T1 after day 2 might prove too costly for the current on-course partner!

The precarious situation of Shane Lowry’s caddie

Lowry has made a total of 15 starts in 2024, excluding the 2024 Open at Royal Troon, as per the PGA Tour. Out of the same, he has raked in a total of 5 top-10 finishes, including a victory at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, where he received a cut of $1.286 million. This sums up his 2024 earnings to a total of $5,093,471, a stark contrast from Scheffler’s $27,696,858.

The Irishman’s caddie, consequently, would have received much less than that of Ted Scott. As per the usual looper pay, the on-course partner would receive 10% of the player’s earnings in case of a win, 7% in case of a T2-T10 finish, and 5% if the golfer falls outside T10. Reynold’s income, apart from the weekly base pay of around $1500-$3000, would then amount to a total of $377,047.35.

Shane Lowry’s caddie would have received, as per the caddie pay calculations, $128,600 for the Zurich Classic win, along with $203,258.3 for the four top-10 finishes. The rest, $45,189.05, he raked in through the nine events in which he made the cut. Thus, a loss at the Open Championship, which awards $3,100,000 to the winning golfer, will prove costly for the caddie.

On the other hand, if Ted Scott were to miss out on the rest of the major and Scottie Scheffler’s chances, consequently, were to take a hit, the looper would only be losing out on $310,000. This is but a small portion of the American golfer’s earnings that he garnered in the current season!

Scottie Scheffler’s caddie and his 2024 earnings!

Scott has earned a total of $2.6 million in the current season, all thanks to the 13 top-10 finishes, including the six wins that Scheffler carded. If the looper were to be included in the PGA Tour’s official money list for 2024, then he would very well come in the 46th position beating as much as 80% of the professionals.

10% of Scheffler’s earnings from 6 wins, 7% of the money from the golfer’s 7 top-10 finishes excluding wins, and 5% of the remaining two cuts made are what made Ted Scott the richest looper this season. That’s not all. It is an exponential jump when compared to his 2023 earnings of $843,600. One can’t help but admire the caddie whom even Scheffler holds immense trust in: “I trust him to rake a bunker more than my buddies.”
