Scottie Scheffler fired his caddie after receiving a tip that he had taken money from one of Scottie Scheffler’s opponents to sabotage Scottie’s golf bag (video)

World number one Scottie Scheffler admitted he was briefly confused by the behaviour of his caddie during the second round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Scheffler carded a bogey-free 5-under 65 on Friday at TPC Southwind to get himself into contention at the halfway stage.

The reigning Masters champion put circles on his scorecard at 3, 8, 15, 16 and 17.

On the par-4 9th hole, Scheffler found the rough on the right side of the fairway with his tee shot.

By the time Scheffler was ready to play his approach from 108 yards his looper Ted Scott was already on the green.

Asked why, Scheffler told reporters that Scott ‘didn’t trust’ the yardage book and wanted to make sure he had the correct number.

“Honestly, as he was running up to the 9th green, I was thinking to myself, why is he doing that?

“I’m in the rough; I’m just trying to make sure I get it up there on the green.

“He wanted to make sure the number was correct on the green. It was. It was a good number.”

Scheffler added: “He didn’t trust the book, but by the time I thought about it, he was already up there on the green measuring the distance.

“He did that twice today; he did it on 2 and he did it on 9 and I guess he got tired because he didn’t do it the rest of the day.”

The 28-year-old also seemed amused by something as he prepared to play his second shot into the 16th hole.

Turns out, ‘some kind of bug’ was on his golf ball.

“I don’t know exactly what it was, but it had wings, so I was able to kind of grab it and just kind of move it,” he said.

He added: “It was entertaining because I grabbed both of its wings very gently. I was able to grab it off the ball and it was trying to flutter as I had it by its wings so you could kind of feel it moving.

“I just wanted to make sure I put it away from my ball so it wouldn’t be going back on my ball.”

Scheffler was playing alongside Xander Schauffele, who posted a 1-under 69 to sit just outside the top-10 going into the weekend.

Elsewhere, Hideki Matsuyama shot a 6-under 64 to tie the lead on 11-under with Denny McCarthy.

Matsuyama was robbed en route to this event after the Olympic Games and he told reporters after the opening round exactly what happened.
