News: Freddie Freeman revealed feeling lonely and empty after his close friend, Jason Heyward, unexpectedly announced his departure from the Dodgers! Freddie emphasized that this has severely impacted his motivation to play!

Friendships are challenging to maintain, and even more so when distance comes into play.

LA Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman’s reaction to teammate

and longtime friend Jason Heyward’s surprising release from the Dodgers has tugged at the heartstrings of fans as well as his teammates.

Heyward, who has been a reliable presence in the locker room and on the field, has parted ways with the Dodgers.

With Chris Taylor fully recovered after nearly a month, the Dodgers put Heyward on assignment to make room for Taylor.

Freddie Freeman’s response is a reminder of how interconnected these athletes are and the impact such decisions can have on their lives.

Both Freeman and Heyward were drafted in 2007 by Atlanta and developed what Freeman called a “lifelong friendship” in those years. Freeman lobbied hard for the Dodgers to sign Heyward to a minor league deal before the 2023 season. Heyward was not just any player; he was a veteran with a history filled with accolades. So what led the team to sever ties with someone who’s been a critical piece of the puzzle?

A tough goodbye for Freeman

It’s tough to see a teammate, regardless of circumstances, go through such transitions. “It’s above my pay grade about what the decisions and all that stuff are, but just personally, it’s sad,” the Dodgers’ veteran first baseman said, adding that Heyward has not spoken much to anyone on the team since. The last time the duo got separated was in 2014 when Jason Heyward got traded from the Braves to the St. Louis Cardinals. “I text messaged him and said it feels like 2014 all over again”  added Freeman. Well, he wasn’t alone in feeling this way, players also understood the weight of change. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided certainty that the team felt strongly about this decision, but everyone also understood that it is part of the job.

Jason Heyward, 35, provided excellent defense in right field in 49 of his 61 games this season. But this season, he only managed a .208 batting average with a .682 OPS, 10 doubles, 6 home runs, and 28 RBI. Although Heyward might be useful in a pinch-hitting role, he is primarily a right fielder, and the Dodgers have several players that can play center field. With Taylor, Tommy Edman, and Enrique Hernandez on the roster and a rotational member of the team, versatility seems to be a top priority for the LA Dodgers. Despite Heyward’s solid defensive performance, his batting statistics this season were less impressive, which contributed to the Dodgers’ decision to part ways. However, his experience and potential for postseason contributions make him a compelling option for other teams.

What’s next for Jason Heyward?

According to reports, the Roy Campanella Award winner has cleared waivers and been released by the team, making him a free agent. Jason Heyward is eligible for the postseason if he signs a new contract by the end of August. He has played for the Braves (2010-14), Cardinals (2015), Cubs (2016-22), and Dodgers (2023-24) in his MLB career. He presents an intriguing possibility to teams looking to add an experienced presence and a lefty bat to their squad as October and playoff baseball approach.

Returning to the Braves could be a nostalgic move. Jason Heyward started his career in Atlanta and was a key figure during his early years. With the Braves currently a powerhouse in the National League, Heyward’s familiarity with the organization and his veteran presence could provide both depth and leadership, especially in a postseason push. He also spent a significant part of his career with the Cubs, including being a key part of their 2016 World Series win. Though the Cubs are in a transitional phase, re-signing with them could be a good fit if they are looking to add a veteran presence to help guide younger players or provide a boost as they make a late-season run.

The Yankees could also be another option as they could use an experienced left-handed bat and strong defensive outfielder and make their playoff push. Wherever and whichever team Jason Heyward gets into, one thing is for sure: the bond between Freeman and Heyward will be as strong as ever before. They have neither allowed distance nor rivalry among teams to come into their friendship. Even in the face of change, friendships can endure. So while fans may mourn the departure of a familiar face from their favorite team, what remains is the rich tapestry of memories woven throughout the seasons.
