Kylian Mbappé faces a bench role after a nose injury at Euro 2024, risking France’s early exit due to underwhelming performances throughout the season

Injured Kylian Mbappe is yet to sparkle for France at Euro 2024, however, Didier Deschamps believes that the Real Madrid star’s best is yet to come.

    • WHAT HAPPENED?

France as a team have failed to fulfil their potential in the current edition of the Euros, despite reaching the semi-final. Le Bleus have only scored three goals in five games, with their tally made up of two own goals and one penalty. The only French player to have scored was Mbappe from the spot against Poland in their final group-stage game, however, having suffered a broken nose, his participation in a last-four clash with Spain may be in doubt.

    WHAT DESCHAMPS SAID

Speaking to Telefoot, the France boss cleared doubts about Mbappe’s participation and fired back at criticism thrown towards the Real Madrid-bound forward.

He said: “Don’t you think he has already made enough history, with what he has done so far? He wants to make even more history.

“We did everything we could with him, with the medical staff, to get him to be here. During the preparation, he had a little back problem, too, but Kylian is here.

“Even if he’s not 100%, I know very well that for the opponent, knowing he’s playing makes them think and forces them to adapt.”

    • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe has been one of the most important players for Deschamps over the course of the last six years, as he was the major catalyst for France’s 2018 World Cup victory as they went unbeaten through that tournament. He also followed it up by almost singlehandedly winning the 2022 World Cup for Les Bleus, after netting a hat-trick in the final against Argentina who led 2-0 in Lusail with 10 minutes to play.

    • WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE?

The French superstar will likely start the clash against favourites Spain on July 10 at the Allianz Arena in Munich, and he will be hoping to have a much better match this time out while avoiding further issues with his nose and protective mask.

Despite the injury, Kylian Mbappe is still expected to shine for France at Euro 2024. Although he has not had the best tournament so far, Didier Deschamps has full confidence in the Real Madrid star’s abilities and believes that his best is yet to come.

France has struggled to meet expectations in the current Euros, with only three goals scored in five games. Interestingly, two of those goals were own goals and one was a penalty converted by Mbappe against Poland. However, with a broken nose, his availability for the semi-final against Spain is uncertain.

In a recent interview with Telefoot, Deschamps defended Mbappe against criticism and expressed his belief in the young forward’s desire to make history. Despite facing physical challenges, Mbappe remains a key player for the French team and his presence alone can influence the opponent’s tactics.

Having played a crucial role in France’s World Cup triumph in 2018 and almost singlehandedly securing victory in the 2022 World Cup final, Mbappe’s impact on the national team is undeniable.

Looking ahead, Mbappe is expected to feature in the semi-final clash against Spain on July 10. He will be aiming to deliver a standout performance while managing his injury concerns with a protective mask.
