Justin Thomas couldn’t help but poke fun at himself with the 2024 PGA Tour season coming to a close.
Thomas’ season did not pan out the way he expected it to, missing the cut at The Genesis Invitational, the Players Championship, the Masters and the US Open.
His best finish of the season came at the very start of the year, finishing T3 at The American Express.
Because of his lackluster season, Thomas needed a stellar performance at the BMW Championship to have a shot at making it into the top 30 in the FedExCup standings.
He finished his final round at Castle Pines four-under 68, falling to 31st after starting the day in 22nd.
However, Jason Day had a less-than-stellar outing in his final round, which saw him drop from 25th to 33rd in points.
He tripled-bogeyed on the 14th hole and double-bogeyed on the 15th hole, essentially ending any chances he would have of retaining his spot for the Tour Championship.
To celebrate making the top 30 for a playoff spot, Thomas posted a video on X, chronicling his immense luck. The video in question is from ‘Dumb and Dumber’, which features comic legend Jim Carrey trying his luck with Mary Swanson, played by Lauren Holly.
In the scene, Carrey and Holly are discussing odds, with the latter proclaiming Carrey had a very low chance of dating a woman like her, with there being a “one out of a million” chance of that happening. Unfazed, Carrey retorted: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance.”
In reference to that scene, Thomas posted an edited version of the video. Instead of Carrey, the American pasted an image of his face on top of the comedian’s while the trophy was pasted on top of Holly’s face.
Despite where he ended the season, Thomas appears to be confident in his abilities to make noise during the Tour Championship, should all pieces all where they might. However, there was a point during the BMW Championship when the anxiety of waiting to see where he would be finishing the season proved to be too much.
After he completed his final round, Thomas admitted to flying back home to avoid any further effects to his headspace. After falling to 30th in points, Thomas shared what was going through his mind for the rest of the weekend.
“Just going home. Going to go to Jupiter,” Thomas said, per Golf Digest. “There’s no need for me to sit here and stress this out all afternoon. It sucks, but it’s the position I put myself in. I’m happily just going to go home and get a couple nights at home and then hopefully head to Atlanta on Tuesday.”
While Thomas looks to make the most of his opportunity, world No.1 Scottie Scheffler will look to make the 2024 season be even more memorable as he finishes the season first in points. Meanwhile, last year’s winner Viktor Hovland will look to repeat his success, despite finishing the season in 17th.
“I understand that if I do get into Atlanta I’m going to be beyond a long shot, but in my eyes I have a chance, and that’s all I want,” Thomas said of his odds at the championship, per Golf.com. “It’s a lot of pressure, but you’ve got to play well at the right time, and that’s what the Playoffs are about.”
