Bryson DeChambeau has had anyone from long drive champions to Sergio Garcia to Donald Trump on his Break 50 YouTube series,
but until recently, he didn’t have the most entertaining man in the history of golf. Thank goodness, Bryson got two-time major champion, country musician,
and golfing legend John Daly on to make a lot of birdies, watch Long John drink a lot of booze/rip a lot of cigs, and have fun.
Damn did the episode deliver. It’s a long one, clocking in at damn near an hour. If nothing else, it’s cool to see Daly’s trademark super-lengthy swing can still get it done.
He plays here and there on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, and you’ll see him at The Open Championship and PGA Championship with the winner’s exemption,
but he’s sort of like Sasquatch when it comes to getting the TV coverage to air any of his shots. This 18-hole scramble with Bryson gives unfettered access to Daly.
But really when you watch John Daly, it’s as much for the pure golfing ability as it is his entertaining personality. He’s thrilled fans all over the world, and I’m sure getting to see him in person results in unforgettable interactions. Lucky for Bryson, the reigning U.S. Open champ, he got hours worth of one-on-one time with Daly, with the best exchanges caught on camera for millions of viewers to see.
Some generous soul went through the labor of love of assembling Daly’s best quotes throughout the round, and my goodness, the man can seemingly say no wrong. Just a medley of hilarious nuggets you have to hear to believe.
Shall I spoil whether or not JD and Bryson broke 50? I shall not. I will say they had a real shot at it. Whether they converted is up to you to find out by watching the vid. And there were even more Daly one-liners beyond the reel above that made the cut and are worth watching.
My favorite bit? Daly can apparently calibrate how far he flies his clubs whether he’s drunk or sober. Before one particular shot, he says, “I fly this 236 yards when I’m drunk. Sober? 220.”
At one point, the fellas are having a beverage topped off with chocolate syrup. Daly gives Bryson a four count before transferring the Hershey’s elixer to his cup, quipping, “One, two, three, four, five, six — ’cause I’m fatter than you.”
What a getup and general vibe Daly had going, too. Full-blown “HICK” hat. Massive ZZ Top-style beard. Sick shades. Cranked-up-to-eleven-loud USA shorts. No shoes. He’s simply the best.
