Two-time Masters Champion and Texas alumnus Scottie Scheffler has been the world No. 1 since March 2022, yet he is still occasionally counted out.
This is understandable, given that Scheffler entered the final round at the Le Golf National in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France, trailing by four shots.
But, of course, he had an incredible comeback in him. The former Longhorn shot a course record 62 (-9) Sunday to complete his improbable rally with an Olympic record -19 overall.
Scheffler went on a prime Tiger Woods-esque tear with an outstanding back nine that featured six birdies, including four in a row on holes 14-17, to secure his first gold medal.
In addition to Scheffler’s historic round, he did have help as some of those in front of him faltered, namely John Rahm of Spain.
Before Sunday’s final round, Rahm led the field at -14, but shot a 70 (-1) on Sunday, which would land him two shots short of the podium.
Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood (-18), who was a shot ahead of Scheffler heading into the 17th hole, also broke the previous Olympic record of -17 set by American Xander Schauffele in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics but had to settle for a silver medal after a costly bogey on 17.
Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama also impressed, tying the previous Olympic record with an impressive -17, including a 65 (-6) on Sunday, but that was only enough for bronze.
Victor Perez enthralled the crowd in his native France, shooting a magnificent 63 (-8) in the final round but finished a shot behind Matsuyama, just short of a medal.
With all four 2024 major championships in the books, Scheffler is currently atop the FedEx Cup standings with a substantial 1,936-point lead over Schauffele as the FedEx Cup playoffs approach.
