The 27-year-old golfer was arrested by Louisville police early Friday morning and charged with four counts while traveling to Valhalla Golf Club by car.
After being handcuffed, fingerprinted and photographed “for the record,” Scheffler was released and returned to the course in time to play.
Scheffler ended up making six birdies to close out the second round with a 5-under 66 and move into a tie for fourth place.
With a total of 9-under, Scheffler is just three strokes behind leader Xander Schauffele.
In fact, Scheffler admitted that the experience wasn’t a pleasant one, and it took him a few holes to get his bearings.
“Coming here and trying to play today was a challenge, but I tried my best to control my mind, control my breathing,” Scheffler said.
Of course, the spectators on the course were also aware of the incident with the world’s No. 1 golfer, and many tried to distract Scheffler. There were shouts of “Free Scottie” after the American golfer finished his swing.
“I really don’t know how people will receive it. I feel like they cheered louder for me today. I really felt that way.” Scheffler said.
With this 66, Scheffler extended his streak of 43 consecutive rounds with even par or better, dating back to the Tour Championship last August. The world No. 1 golfer is on the verge of winning his 5th in the last 6 tournaments, as well as his 3rd major title in his career.
At the end of the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship, Xander Schauffele still held the top spot with a total score of -12, followed by Collin Morikawa with -11 strokes and Sahith Theegala with -10 strokes.
