Patrick Reed, also known as Captain America a name given by his fans, is undoubtedly popular for his amazing golfing skills 

and was the talk of the town after he won his first master tournament in 2018. 

Everyone was cheering for the golfer as he snatched the trophy from the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Rickie Fowler. 

While his wife and brother-in-law accompanied the LIV golfer at the Augusta National Golf Course, his folks, who lived only three miles away from the course, 

were nowhere to be seen. You must be wondering why his parents did not come to his game. Well, there’s quite a history behind this estrangement.

Why is Patrick Reed not connected with his parents anymore?

The story goes back to Reed’s college days. When the golfer was a freshman at the University of Georgia, he interestingly went on a date with Justine’s younger sister Kris and met Justine through her. The couple started dating after understanding they were made for each other, which Reed describes as “the best decision of his life”. But that was not the way his parents felt at the time.

Reed approached his parents, Bill and Jeannette, in 2012, with the idea of marrying Justine. What he thought was a harmless conversation turned out to be a ticking bomb. To the LIV golfer’s surprise, his parents disapproved of his decision, saying he was only 22 and too young to get married. But Reed got married nonetheless and cut off all contact with his parents, according to the Golf.

2014 was the year when Reed’s parents tried to come closer to the golfer. Two years after Reed got married, his parents got passes for the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 from their friends and decided to go with their daughter Hannah. The game was going well, with Reed performing phenomenally as ever. However, when their son reached the 18th hole, Justine reportedly requested the police to confiscate Bill and Jeannette’s family badges, resulting in their removal from the game. But John Bodenhamer, the USGA’s senior managing director, who took this action, described the situation quite differently.

According to him, Reed’s parents were removed because they made some “intimidating movements” towards Justine. Well, you’re wrong if you think that was all the drama in the Reed family! Things took a wild turn in 2016 when Justine made a Facebook post. 

Justine Reed’s comment on her husband’s parents

Only two years after the U.S. Open incident, Justine Reed went on Facebook and called her in-laws ‘sick people.’ Justine wrote, “They are sick people and need help. Time will tell all. And people are starting to wake up and realize what kind of people his parents really are.”

“You all should pick up the book: Breaking the Bonds of Adult Child Abuse. Yes, there are actual books on people like this. I am an RN and they are textbook cases,” she continued. Reed’s sister Hannah quickly addressed how ‘heartbreaking’ and ‘devastating’ it is for Bill and Jeannette.

“I have sat back and watched the numerous and disgusting accusations his wife, mother-in-law and everyone now associated with his family have made. Patrick is not the same person he used to be. This is not a brother anymore, but a selfish, horrible stranger and it’s heartbreaking … It is devastating seeing my parents hurt and suffer from what is being posted about them,” wrote Hannah on her own Facebook, defending her parents. 

Alan Shipnuck, a Golf reporter, wrote in his report that even after this estrangement, the Reed family likes to celebrate the golfer’s victories. Golfer’s family still has everything that was once special to Reed, from crystal trophies and photographs to his old golf bags. Before the 2018 tournament, Reed’s mother Jeannette went on Facebook, but this time to wish her son good luck. She posted a childhood picture of Reed in which he was holding a golf club and captioned it, “Let’s do this Baby! GO PATRICK!” 

Not only that, Jeannette was there also when Reed won the masters. “I can’t believe my son is the Masters champion. It’s surreal,” said Jeannette with tears streaming down her eyes, after Reed’s win at the Augusta National Golf Course, according to the Golf. Reed’s father, Bill, didn’t lag in expressing his emotions. In an interview with ESPN, “As we were all hugging as a family, we said, ‘This is for Patrick too. We are all hugging him too,’” Bill said, reminiscing about the epic win.

But when Reed was asked about this, family conflicts led to his parents not being with him on his special day. The player dodged the question by simply saying, “I’m just out here to play golf and try to win golf tournaments”. Every family has their fair share of problems, and the Reeds have theirs.
