Derek Carr is ‘devastated’ both physically and mentally after a severe injury that will sideline him for weeks: ‘I don’t want anyone to replace my position…’

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is set to miss “multiple games” after suffering an oblique injury during the team’s crushing 27-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 8, 2024.

The injury, which occurred in the second half of the game, has sent shockwaves through the Saints’ organization and fanbase.

Carr’s absence for an extended period raises significant concerns for the team, especially given their difficult upcoming schedule and the importance of his role as the team’s leader and offensive anchor.

Carr, who joined the Saints in the offseason, was hoping to be a stabilizing force for the franchise after a somewhat turbulent start to his career in New Orleans.

He has had moments of brilliance, showing flashes of the elite quarterback play that earned him recognition in previous seasons, but he had also been battling inconsistency.

However, despite some early struggles, Carr was beginning to find his rhythm with his new team, and many believed he could lead the Saints to the playoffs.

That hope now appears much more uncertain with his injury.

The injury occurred late in the game when Carr was hit during a third-quarter drive. He immediately grimaced in pain, holding his side, and after a brief evaluation on the sideline, it was clear that he was dealing with something serious. Though he tried to play through the discomfort, Carr’s situation worsened, and he was ultimately forced to leave the field. Shortly after, the Saints announced that Carr had sustained an oblique injury and would be out indefinitely. According to initial reports, Carr could be sidelined for multiple games, though the team is waiting on further tests to determine the full extent of the damage.

Oblique injuries are notoriously difficult for athletes, particularly for quarterbacks, as they rely heavily on core strength to throw the football with precision. The oblique muscles are essential for rotational movements, which are crucial for the mechanics of a quarterback’s throw. Depending on the severity of the injury, Carr could be looking at a lengthy recovery, and the Saints will now have to adapt to life without their starter for the foreseeable future.

In Carr’s absence, backup quarterback Jameis Winston is expected to take over the starting role. Winston, known for his strong arm but also for his inconsistent play, will now be tasked with leading the Saints’ offense during a crucial stretch of the season. Winston has started games in the NFL before, most notably with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his time as a starter has been marked by turnovers and erratic decision-making. While he possesses undeniable talent, Winston’s ability to step in and perform at a high level will be tested immediately. The Saints will need him to manage the game efficiently and keep turnovers to a minimum if they hope to stay competitive.

The timing of this injury couldn’t be worse for the Saints. They were already facing challenges this season, with their offensive line struggling and their running game somewhat inconsistent. Losing Carr, who had shown glimpses of chemistry with his receiving corps, only adds to the uncertainty. The Saints’ offensive success was predicated on Carr’s ability to execute head coach Dennis Allen’s game plan, and now that responsibility shifts to Winston, who will need to quickly establish chemistry with his teammates and prove he can handle the pressure.

With Carr out, the Saints’ already slim playoff hopes are in jeopardy. The team was hoping to contend for the NFC South division title, but without their starting quarterback, that goal becomes significantly harder. The division is still wide open, but each loss from here on out could have a profound impact on their postseason chances. New Orleans will have to rely heavily on their defense, which has been strong this season, and on their star running back Alvin Kamara to help carry the team through this difficult period.

Kamara, who has been the team’s offensive focal point for years, will likely see an increased workload with Carr sidelined. The Saints will need to utilize Kamara’s playmaking ability in both the running and passing games to keep the offense moving, and they may lean on a run-heavy approach in the interim to alleviate pressure on Winston. But the success of this strategy depends on how well Winston can manage the game and avoid costly mistakes.

For the Saints, this injury not only threatens their playoff chances but also raises broader questions about the depth of their roster. While Winston is an experienced backup, the team will now face added pressure to perform without its starting signal caller. The next few weeks will be pivotal in determining whether the Saints can remain competitive and whether Winston can step up when the team needs him most. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the Saints respond to this adversity and whether they can stay afloat in what is shaping up to be a challenging season.
