Despite his setbacks, Shareef contemplated a bold move-relocating to Australia to continue his basketball journey. It was a decision that didn’t sit well with his father.

During a Thanksgiving conversation on a plane, Shaquille expressed his concerns. “Australia’s far,” Shaquille reportedly told Shareef, hinting at the distance that would separate him from his family and the potential difficulties of adjusting to life so far from home. Shareef, initially determined to seek new opportunities, began to reconsider his plans.

This fatherly advice led to a significant shift in Shareef’s trajectory. Instead of pursuing basketball abroad, he chose to stay close to home and take on an unexpected role within his father’s business endeavors. In October 2023, Shaquille O’Neal was named the president of Reebok, a brand he had long been associated with. He soon reached out to Shareef, asking him to help rebrand and revitalize the company.

Shareef revealed his true intentions to his father

Moved by his father’s request and the opportunity to work on a significant project together, Shareef made the decision to take a break from professional basketball. “My job for Reebok right now is kind of bringing in the culture, connecting the culture to Reebok,” Shareef explained. He was tasked with helping redesign the brand’s shoes and clothing and assisting in signing new players. This was a far cry from the basketball courts of Australia, but it was an opportunity Shareef couldn’t pass up.

Despite stepping away from the game, Shareef has assured his fans that his love for basketball remains intact. Rumors had circulated about his potential move to the NBL in Australia and even speculation about his leaving the sport altogether. However, Shareef was quick to clarify that he hasn’t given up on his basketball dreams. “I WILL BE HOOPING AGAIN,” he declared, emphasizing that his current focus is on helping his father and the Reebok brand.
