Author James Patterson’s new book about Tiger Woods chronicled the golfer’s interesting way of pursuing his ex-wife Elin Nordegren.
Woods has lived a long life in the public spotlight, from his breakthrough as a standout teenage prodigy to his well-documented marriage with Nordegren.
How did they meet? Nordegren, then 21, was the Au Pair to fellow golfer Javrik Parnevik in 2001.
According to Patterson, Woods, then 25, almost immediately took a liking to the Swede but was too shy to ask her out directly.
Instead, he requested a member of his team to ask her out on his behalf. Nordegren was apparently “deeply unimpressed” by the gesture at first.
“That’s the way he’s lived his life,” Patterson described the situation to the Daily Mail.
“Whatever Woods needed, whether it was room service or a wife, his first instinct was to say, ‘Let’s get a manager to do that’.”
Additionally, Nordegren had a boyfriend back home in Sweden. However, the couple eventually did go on that date and were married in 2004. Simultaneously, Woods embarked on arguably the greatest golfing career of all time. His 15 career major titles rank second all-time in men’s history behind only the legendary Jack Nicklaus.
Woods has yet to call it quits in his lengthy career dating back to 1995. He won his 14th major title in 2008 before enduring an 11-year gap before winning his next: the 2019 Masters tournament.
In 2024, he competed in all four majors, only making the cut at the Masters. He hasn’t finished in the top 10 at a major since his famous 2019 win at Augusta, having sustained serious leg injuries in a car crash in February 2021.
Woods was married to Nordegren until 2010 before the couple suffered a highly public and messy breakup. The golfer was rumored to be having multiple affairs, and Patterson chronicles an incident where Nordegren calls an alleged mistress on Woods’s phone.
“After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person,” Woods announced when the couple split in 2010.
