HOUSTON – Jarren Duran shone brilliantly as the Red Sox’s leadoff hitter, propelling Boston to a critical 6-5 win against the Astros by hitting a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park. This victory tied the three-game series, providing a much-needed boost for the team’s playoff aspirations.
Manager Alex Cora described the game as a persistent battle, noting, “It felt like that game lasted five hours. Every pitch meant a lot.” With this win, the Red Sox improved to 66-59, inching just 3 1/2 games behind Kansas City and Minnesota who currently hold the second and third American League Wild Card spots, both with records of 70-56.
Duran’s performance was exceptional as he went 4-for-4, walking once and ultimately breaking the tie with a home run off Astros’ reliever Kaleb Ort in his final at-bat of the night. “That guy throws 100 miles per hour, so I was just trying to keep it short and simple, and put a good swing on it,” Duran said of his approach against Ort. His homer, which traveled 367 feet into the Crawford Boxes, was his 17th of the season.
“I bet people will pay to watch [Duran]. You better get here early, because from the first pitch on, he can do something special,” Cora praised his outfielder.
The Red Sox lineup was buoyed by additional support from Triston Casas, who, after nearly four months sidelined due to torn rib cartilage, made significant contributions by reaching base in four of his five plate appearances. This included a pivotal two-run homer off Astros starter Ronel Blanco.
“Blanco has been establishing himself as one of the best pitchers in the league,” Casas acknowledged. “Thankfully, I got [the pitch] and had good timing.”
On the season, Boston stands third in the AL in runs scored, a testament to the depth and power of their lineup, now further strengthened by Casas’s return.
Both starting pitchers struggled and ended the night with no-decisions. Blanco was pulled after just 3 2/3 innings, having allowed five runs and 10 baserunners, while Boston’s Nick Pivetta also gave up five runs over five innings. In contrast to their previous game, Boston’s bullpen held firm with Greg Weissert, Zack Kelly, Luis García, and Kenley Jansen combining for four innings of scoreless relief, setting the stage for Duran’s late-game heroics.
Reflecting on Boston’s rebound after a tough loss the day before, Cora said, “We turned the page really quick, and it starts with the leadoff hitter.”
This win not only balances the series but also revitalizes the Red Sox’s playoff chase as they look to capitalize on their momentum in the concluding game against the Astros.
