News: The Tennis Podcast is confident that Coco Gauff will defend her title at the 2024 US Open! They assert that her recent losses are just minor setbacks in her career

A pundit has given their take on who will go further at the US Open out of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.

The pair are America’s two top-ranked players and have enjoyed success both as singles players and together as a doubles pairing.

Coco Gauff is currently ranked at number two and will enter the US Open as the defending champion.

Jessica Pegula on the other hand, is ranked at number six and Pegula successfully retained her Canadian Open title on Monday.

Will Coco Gauff or Jessica Pegula go further at the US Open?

Gauff claimed her first Grand Slam by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in three sets to win the 2023 US Open in front of her home fans.

She will be a contender for the title in 2024 but her form since Wimbledon has been a concern following losses to Emma Navarro, Donna Vekic and Diana Shnaider. The 20-year-old was also beaten by Pegula at the Berlin Open.

Despite her poor results of late, a member of The Tennis Podcast still backed Gauff over Pegula and believes she can feed off the energy of the US Open crowd to rediscover her best form.

“Coco Gauff has lost her last four matches against players ranked in the top 50. She’s been getting wins against players who she absolutely should be beating,” he said.

“And as soon as she’s put under a little bit more pressure she’s losing and her game is breaking down a bit and it’s been like that for a few weeks now.

“But that crowd can help Coco Gauff in New York and she’s just so tough to actually put away and beat that I think she could get through the first week with kind of her legs and her athleticism and her defence and and the crowd behind her and I think she could build so I would probably still back Gauff in New York.

“It’s tough to say that you’re predicting her to defend her title right now just because of the state of her game but I think I think she can make a better showing of it than she has done in the past few tournaments.”

What are Coco Gauff And Jessica Pegula’s Grand Slam results in 2024?

Gauff began her Grand Slam season by reaching the Australian Open semi-finals for the first time, where she lost to eventual champion Sabalenka.

She then reached the French Open semi-finals and for the third year in a row, Gauff was knocked out of the tournament by Iga Swiatek.

Gauff was tipped by many to win Wimbledon, but she was bamboozled by Navarro who won their fourth round encounter in straight sets.

After six attempts, Pegula has yet to go beyond the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam and her results at the majors in 2024 have been disappointing.

Clara Burel ended her Australian Open campaign in the second round, while Wang Xinyu won an entertaining second round encounter at Wimbledon. Pegula did not play at the French Open as she continued her recovery from injury.
