Tiger Wood’s wife Elin Nordegren issued a brutal remark to the golfer’s mistress when his serial cheating was finally revealed.
The bombshell night all was uncovered, Elin chased her husband out of his house with his own golf club.
It was a huge fall from grace for the much-respected golfer, who had earned a $1billion (£706million) fortune, including £78million in endorsements,
had just won the Masters in Australia and that same year he was photographed meeting then-president Barack Obama at the White House.
Despite the huge scandal, Tiger continued to play – though his career has been called into question this week ahead of the Open Championship.
Rival Colin Montgomerie even suggested that Woods should call time on his playing career having struggled to replicate the form
that made him arguably golf’s greatest ever player in years gone by.
Woods shares two children – Sam and Charlie – with Elin but in November 2009, a story broke that he had been having a affair with a New York City nightclub hostess called Rachel Uchitel. She had been snapped checking into the same hotel as the golfer during the American Masters and allegedly told pals she was in love with him.
Woods tried to shut the accusations down before the story went public and is said to have put Elin on the phone with Rachel. The two women reportedly spoke for half an hour, but Elin wasn’t convinced by her story. Woods left his phone unattended and his wife went through it and found the name of another woman Jaimee Grubbs, who she contacted.
The call went to voicemail and Elin left a very stern message. She said: “You know who this is, because you are f- -king my husband.” Woods wasn’t told Elin made the call and he too tried to get through to the woman. His voicemail said: “Hey, it’s, uh … it’s Tiger. Can you please take your name off your phone? My wife went through my phone and, uh, may be calling you. So if you can, please take your name off that. And, um … just have it as a number on the voicemail. OK? You got to do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right, bye.”
The story broke the next day on Thanksgiving and Elin kept silent. Woods had apparently met Uchitel four months after his son was born. She had shown friends sexy messages they’d sent each other and told pals Woods was divorcing his wife, it’s claimed. Elin reportedly went through his phone again and found some of the messages from Woods, including one that said: “You are the only one I’ve ever loved.”
She is said to have woken Woods, who ran into the bathroom and began texting Uchitel saying he had to leave. Elin reportedly threw his phone at him and chased him with a golf club. Woods got into his car and crashed it, and when it was found the two back windows had been smashed. He was knocked out for six minutes and Elin said she had smashed the car’s windows to get him out of the car.
The couple refused to cooperate with police interviews and within two weeks, 14 women had come forward to say they had slept with Woods during his marriage. Woods lost endorsement deals with Nike, Gatorade, Gillette and Accenture following the scandal. Speaking at a press conference, Woods said: “I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable.”
“For all that I have done, I am so sorry. I have a lot to atone for, but there’s one issue I really want to discuss. Some people have speculated that Elin somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. It hurts me that people would fabricate a story like that.” The couple divorced in August 2010.
