Isiah Thomas Shares a Memorable Larry Bird Story
Isiah Thomas, known for his wealth of NBA stories, recently shared a particularly memorable one involving Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird during an appearance on “ALL THE SMOKE” with hosts Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson.
A Unique Exchange on the Court
Thomas recalled a game where the Detroit Pistons had Kelly Tripucka, Bill Laimbeer, and Kent Benson—three white players—assigned to guard Bird. As they took to the court, Bird, known for his competitive spirit and sharp wit, approached Thomas with a question.
“One time, we had Kelly Tripucka, Bill Laimbeer, and Kent Benson, all white guys. So we walk out on the court, and Larry says, ‘who guards me?’ Larry always calls me Cheesy, so he asked, ‘Cheesy, who guarding me? And I’m like, we got Kelly, Lamb, and Benson, and he’s like, you ain’t got no brothers? That’s disrespectful, you can’t put no white guys on me!”
Bird’s Reaction and Its Implications
Bird’s reaction highlighted his confidence and his views on being guarded by players who he didn’t feel matched up well against him. As one of the greatest players in NBA history and a key offensive force for the Celtics, Bird was vocal about his preference for more challenging matchups, especially when it came to being defended by white players.
A Story for the Ages
Thomas’s recounting of the story was met with laughter, but it also underscored Bird’s fierce competitiveness and unique perspective on the game. “I don’t know how this gonna play with America,” Thomas added with a chuckle, noting the sensitive nature of Bird’s comments.
Thomas’s anecdotes are always engaging, and this particular story about Bird’s reaction and the ensuing banter between the two NBA legends will surely be remembered for years to come.
