Tiger Woods says he couldn’t sleep on the flight to Scotland for a major golf tournament
after watching the news of former President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination, CNN reported on Thursday, July 18.
The 48-year-old golf star flew from Florida to Scotland last Saturday for the 152nd Open Championship,
but appeared tired during his first practice session at Royal Troon Golf Club on Sunday after watching the news of Trump being shot while campaigning in Pennsylvania.
“I didn’t practice much because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind,” Woods told BBC Sport on Tuesday.
“It was a long night, and the whole time we were coming here, we were just watching it. I didn’t sleep at all on the flight, and then we just went out to the golf course.”
Woods, a 15-time major champion, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Trump in 2019, shortly after winning the Masters.
Trump is a golf enthusiast. He has known Woods for a long time, and the two have played golf together several times over the years.
In 2018, when Trump was president, when sports news website Yahoo! Sports asked Woods about his friendship with Trump, Woods replied: “Well, you’re the president of the United States.”
“No matter who’s in office, whether we like or dislike their personality or their politics, we have to respect that office,” Woods added.
Former President Trump was shot in the ear while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania, last Saturday. One spectator was killed and two others were seriously injured in the shooting.
